A water bill that jumps with no change in usage almost always means a leak somewhere. A running toilet, a slab leak, an irrigation zone stuck on, or a service line break. We work through the system zone by zone, from the meter inward, until we find exactly where the water is going. Call (123) 456-7890.
The usual suspects, in order
When a Sacramento bill spikes, we check in the order of likelihood:
- Running toilets. A worn flapper can waste water silently around the clock. The single most common cause.
- Irrigation zones. A stuck valve or cracked lateral runs on schedule, which adds up fast.
- Service line. The meter test tells us in minutes whether water is leaving between the street and the house.
- Slab leaks. Hot spots on the floor or the sound of running water with everything off point here.
How the investigation works
We start at the meter with everything off. If the dial moves, there is a leak. Then it is a process of elimination. House valve off: still moving means the service line. Irrigation isolated: still moving means it is inside. Water heater inlet closed: that separates hot-side from cold-side. Each step narrows the search until one zone, one line, one spot remains.
What to do before we arrive
Read your meter, then read it again two hours later with no water running. That number is useful evidence. Check every toilet with food coloring in the tank: color in the bowl without flushing means the flapper is leaking. Note which irrigation zones run and for how long. Bring all of it to the visit; it shortens the hunt.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my water bill so high when I did not change anything?
Almost always a leak: running toilet, stuck irrigation valve, service line break, or slab leak. The meter test. Read it, wait two hours with no water running, read it again. Confirms whether water is leaving the system.
Can a toilet really cause a huge bill?
Yes. A worn flapper lets the tank drain and refill continuously, and it is silent. Food coloring in the tank is the classic test: if color reaches the bowl without a flush, the toilet is the culprit.
Will finding the leak help with the high bill itself?
Our job is finding where the water went and documenting it. Many water providers have leak-adjustment policies. Ask yours what documentation they need, and our report gives you something concrete to submit.
How fast can you investigate a high bill?
The zone-by-zone process usually fits in a single visit. Call (123) 456-7890, tell us the bill jumped, and we will schedule the investigation.
My bill is high only in summer. Is that still a leak?
Often yes. Summer points at irrigation. A stuck valve or cracked lateral runs every cycle all season. A zone-by-zone irrigation check finds it quickly.
